How We Test Every Product

Transparency is the foundation of trust. Here is exactly how we evaluate every product we review -- from the moment we purchase it to the day we publish our verdict. No shortcuts, no bias, no exceptions.

01 We Buy Everything Ourselves

Our Promise

No free samples. No manufacturer-provided units. No sponsored placements. Every single product reviewed on BestFitPicks is purchased at full retail price, just like you would buy it.

This is the single most important decision we have made as a review site. When a company sends you a free product, there is an implicit expectation -- even if unspoken -- that the review will be favorable. We eliminate that pressure entirely by spending our own money.

We buy from the same retailers you do: Amazon, brand websites, specialty fitness stores. We pay full price, we deal with the same shipping and packaging, and we experience the same unboxing you would. If a product arrives damaged or defective, that factors into our review -- because it would factor into yours.

This independence costs us thousands of dollars per year. We believe it is worth every cent because it means our recommendations are genuinely ours. When we say a product is the best, we are staking our own money on that claim.

02 Our Testing Protocol

Every product we review goes through a standardized five-step process. This ensures consistency across categories and gives you a reliable basis for comparison.

  1. Purchase & Unboxing

We buy the product at full retail price from a standard retail channel. We document packaging quality, included accessories, setup instructions, and first impressions. If the out-of-box experience is poor, we note it -- because first impressions matter.

  2. Real-World Testing

Every product goes through a minimum two-week testing period under actual use conditions. Protein powders get mixed into daily routines. Fitness trackers get worn during runs, sleep, and workouts. Gym equipment gets used in real training sessions. We do not simulate -- we live with these products.

  3. Data Collection

We gather standardized measurements, run benchmarks, and compile comparison metrics relevant to each category. Heart rate accuracy is checked against a chest strap. Protein content is compared to label claims. Equipment weight limits are stress-tested. Numbers do not lie.

  4. Scoring

Products are rated on a 10-point scale across category-specific criteria. Each criterion is weighted based on its importance to the end user. The final score is a weighted average, not a simple mean -- because some things matter more than others. Details of our scoring system are below.

  5. Ongoing Monitoring

Our job does not end at publication. We re-test products every six months to check for durability and long-term performance. When manufacturers change formulas, update firmware, or release new models, we update our reviews accordingly. Every review includes a "last tested" date so you always know how current our data is.

04 Our Scoring System

We use a 10-point scale because it provides enough granularity to distinguish between products without creating meaningless precision. Here is what each range means.

Score Rating What It Means
9.0+ Exceptional Best-in-class. A product that excels in virtually every criterion and sets the standard for its category. Reserved for truly outstanding performers.
8.0 - 8.9 Excellent Highly recommended. Strong performance across the board with only minor compromises. A product most people will be very happy with.
7.0 - 7.9 Good A solid option with clear strengths, though it may fall short in one or two areas. Worth considering depending on your priorities and budget.
Below 7.0 Not Recommended We do not feature products that score below 7.0. If a product cannot clear this bar, there are better options available and we would rather point you to those.

Every score is a weighted average of category-specific criteria. We publish the individual criterion scores alongside the overall rating so you can see exactly where a product excels and where it falls short. Transparency is not optional -- it is the whole point.
